MALLIG, Isabela – The Department of Science and Technology Provincial Science and Technology Center Isabela in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Mallig empowered the Malligueños thru a 2-day Science and Technology Caravan on September 4-5, 2018 at Mallig Multipurpose Gymnasium, LGU Mallig, here.
The caravan aimed to raise public awareness and appreciation of DOST programs and services, develop possible partnership with local stakeholders, and establish relevant S&T projects in Mallig, Isabela. This also served as a venue to introduce the department’s thrusts and programs to local stakeholders and prospective MSMEs in the region.

The opening program was held on September 4, 2018. Hon. Karen D. Benitez, Municipal Administrator, Hon. Diosdado B. Felipe, Municipal Vice Mayor, Mr. Florentino T. Somera Jr., Municipal Agriculturist and Mr. Norman Jay B. Alvarado, MDRRMO graced the opening program.

“Iti DOST ket maysa nga ahensya ti gobyerno nga tumultulong iti kinasasangbay iti ili tayo. Ket usaren tayu kuma nga nasayaat daytoy nga gundaway nga naipaay kanyayu iti tatta nga aldaw (DOST is one of the agencies of the government that assists in the betterment of the community. May you wisely use this opportunity given to you this day.)” Provincial Director Marcelo Miguel during his message.

“Adu gayam ti maitulong ti DOST kinyatayu isu nga agdingngeg kayu tapnu maammuan tayu ti naduma-duma nga benepepisyo maipangngep ken daytoy nga departamento (I have learned that there are many services DOST can offer that is why you should listen so that you will know the different benefits you can avail from the department)” Municipal Administrator Karen Benitez added.

A series of technology fora which included discussions on Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), Scholarship, Deployment of Early Warning System (DEWS), Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL), Carageenan Technology, STARBOOKS, Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) and Food Innovation Center (FIC) followed. Installation of STARBOOKS for LGU Mallig constituents and Science Film Viewing at Mallig Central School also took place simultaneously with the lectures.

For the 2nd day, Training on Food Safety, Dragon fruit processing (wine, vinegar, jam, jelly, pickles), Dishwashing Liquid Soap making and Mushroom production and processing were simultaneously conducted. Industry Dialogue with MSMEs regarding Packaging and Labeling, Food Innovation and RSTL, Science Film Viewing at Mallig National High School and Consultancy on Municipal Food Safety were also conducted to seek collaborations with the local stakeholders.

The caravan was concluded by sharing of learnings from the participants and a closing message from PD Marcelo G. Miguel.

Ms. Marissa C. Javier, one of the participants, said “Masuwerte kami kasi marami kaming natutunan at may premyo pa kaming Carageenan na makatutulong sa aming hanapbuhay”

About 208 participants benefitted from the caravan. It is hoped that through this S&T Caravan, more Malligueños will be part of the S&T community and help in empowering and enriching their lives through S&T. (Angel B. Gorospe, PSTC Isabela)
